Newmarket travelled to Peterborough
for an early start in the second round of the league cup.
In the first half Newmarket failed
to find their form and were slow to get going but still managed to
punish Peterborough for slack defending with goals coming from Di
Thomas and Beth Wombwell.
With Captain Sam Smith making her
debut in goal, the Newmarket defence held strong and quickly
cleared any threats on goal to ensure Town went into half time
with a 2-0 advantage.
The half time team talk seemed to
wake the Newmarket players up and they managed to regain their
form from previous weeks. Quick passing from the midfield and fast
running from the forward line pinned the Peterborough team back to
their own half for much of the 35 minutes.
The goals finally started to flow
for Newmarket when Thomas finished off a ball that Claire
McDonnell played through the keepers legs.
In midfield Lydia Fison picked off
any loose balls and made it difficult for Peterborough to clear
their defence. This resulted in a fourth goal for Newmarket which
Claire McDonnell claimed with a reverse stick shot.
Tireless running from Beth Wombwell
throughout the game set up Di Thomas for her hat trick and she
took her chance well with a powerful shot on goal. Claire
McDonnell finished the scoring off with a well taken goal which
ensured Town progress to the next round with what turned out to be
a comfortable 6-0 victory.
