After last weeks 5-1 victory
at home to Spalding 4ths, Newmarket travelled to Cambridge in the hope
they could repeat last weeks impressive performance. Cambridge started
strongly with a goal in the opening couple of minutes, slotting the ball
through goalkeeper Chris Warren’s legs. Newmarket responded with a well
worked goal scored by Harry Bell. Josh Dawson, playing centre back, drove
Newmarket forward linking up well with the midfield. Just before the half
time interval, Dawson hit the ball up field to Chris Leggett, who reversed
flicked it high in the air, over the keepers head, into the back of the
net. This gave Newmarket a 2-1 lead at half time.
The second half saw Cambridge
start brightly again, but Newmarket defended strongly. But Cambridge
managed to break the defence and score an equaliser. Newmarket restarted
with Ollie Wade and Niall Warn exploiting the wings well. But Cambridge on
the counter attack pressured Newmarket into making a mistake at the back
and scoring an own goal. After another restart, Dawson drove up the pitch
again but got taken out by a Cambridge midfielder, who received a green
card for the challenge. Ben Gottfredsen and man of the match Marc Simpson,
played the ball well between each other, leading to numerous attacks,
where Newmarket went close on several occasions. As the game was coming to
end, a mistake by Cambridge at a 16 yard hit out led to Bell winning the
ball, which left him one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and fired the ball
into the bottom corner of the goal for the equaliser. Neither team managed
to score a winning goal, as the final whistle. Both teams played well, and
3-3 was a fair result by the end.
Last week Newmarket 2nds
played Spalding 4ths at home and Newmarket ran out 5-1 winners, for their
first win of the season. Goals from Barney Bowens, Niall Warn, Chris
Leggett and a brace from Harry Bell, won Newmarket the game. Man of the
match Greg Cummins kept Newmarket strong at the back and played a part in
most of Newmarket’s goals.
Next week Newmarket 2nds host
Ely City 4ths at 12.30.
