Boston hit for six
Newmarket entertained Boston on Saturday in their
Norwich Union Division Two North third round match, a team who
grabbed a point last year to deny Newmarket the win they were more
than capable of.
With other ideas this time around, Newmarket,
with the same line up as the previous week except for Chris Punshon
returning for Dave Badcock, were not going to settle for a draw. The
home side started to play some exciting hockey and looked a force to
be reckoned with. The impressive midfield line up of Townson,
Cummins and Robinson dominated the centre and dictated play.
Midway through the half came the turning point.
Unfortunately for Boston, it was a nasty one. Boston took a 16-yard
hit out only to see the ball ricochet of Robinson's outstretched
stick and hit Boston's key midfielder on the forehead. Being forced
to remove their player, Boston had to shuffle things around.
Soon after, Newmarket got their first goal of the
match. Robinson darted through the middle and saw Gurnell unmarked.
He slipped the ball through and Gurnell was able to slot home with
ease. Remarkably, there was not change to the score-line that half.
The second half was when the slaughter began.
First a short corner, Gurnell was spot on with the stop and Blades
made no mistake punishing with a simple strike past the 'keeper
making it 2-0. Gurnell got his second again from a Robinson move and
Bennett made it 4-0 after pouncing on a loose ball after the 'keeper
had saved a shot from Townson.
The fifth and six goals were again short corners,
Townson pushing out, Gurnell stopping and Blades unleashing
outstanding shots. It was super to see Blades getting a hat-trick,
it'll do his confidence no end of good.
With a league slip date this Saturday, Newmarket
are playing against Harlow in a friendly.
