Newmarket Hockey Club opened their season by taking on Peterborough
Town who were fifth in the Premier Division of the East League last
season - three sections higher than Newmarket and one of the best
teams in the region.
Newmarket, who were involved in a two-day
tournament which finished only two hours before the Peterborough
match, fielded several talented youngsters.
Under a lot of pressure, Newmarket were lucky to
only be down 4-0 at half-time, the hosts having missed a penalty
flick and countless other opportunities.
Peterborough should have added to their tally in
the second half but were denied by Newmarket's goalkeeper and his
colleagues.
It was a commendable performance by a young and
inexperienced side.
