Brace for Wilson as
Town shine
Newmarket gave a good
performance in winning their premier Holidays East Hockey League
Division Eight North-West match. They started with one of their
strongest teams, Ian Newham returning to the side.
Newmarket dominated
most of the game but Bedford's defence proved difficult to break
down It was from a breakaway that Bedford scored with a good shot
which flew high into Newmarket's goal.
The weather was again
not ideal for hockey and Newmarket went into the second half a goal
down.
Through strong running
from Greenwood and Cummins on the right wing and inter-passing
between Newham and Magnusson, Newmarket won numerous short corners
from which Wilson eventually scored twice. One was a reverse
stick-flick and the second came from a pass from Cummins, Wilson
shooting into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.
Marsh missed a golden
opportunity to score his first goal when he collected a good cross
from Wilson and turned on the spot but his shot went wide. Wilson
should have collected a hat-trick but a defender made a marvellous
save by taking the ball off the line.
This was Newmarket's
third win of the season. They have the experience and skill to win
their division and those who played well are too numerous to
mention.
