Newmarket hit five
but it is no Tea Party at Boston
Travelling into
Lincolnshire has all the excitement of, well, travelling to Ely for
your home games, and Newmarket, knowing they had gone to the top of
the league with their exploits so far this season, seemed to be
overawed by the complete lack of a landscape!
However, on a very fast
pitch, they struck the first blow when, following several nimble
attacks, particularly down the right hand side, they won a
succession of short corners, from one of the which Simon Gibson
struck the ball past the Boston 'keeper after only five minutes.
Newmarket then had a roistering 20 minutes of pressure, during which
Hayden Marsh played well on the left, and it only seemed a matter of
time before Newmarket, and probably "Daddy" Newham, increased their
lead. However, Newham took a nasty knock and was substituted for the
remainder of the game by Magnus Magnusson (who therefore hadn't
started but did finish!).
At this point, Boston
struck with a breakaway goal, leaving Newmarket unsure as to how
they were approaching half-time at 1-1. Never fear - one minute
later and Captain Greg Cummins, superb throughout, scored the first
of his hat-trick, to leave the score at 2-1 by halfway.
Into the second half,
and Cummins struck the second of his three, before Boston drew back
to 3-2, after some unusually slack Newmarket defending, and the game
took on a different look. Indeed, for several minutes Newmarket were
under severe pressure to fend off the marauding Boston forwards.
Then, normal service
was resumed. Newmarket added a fourth through William Wilson, Simon
Greenwood started joining in the attacks from behind the front line
on the right hand-side, and Boston were reduced to only 10 men after
a series of late and dangerous tackles from the offending player.
Towards the end Cummins wrapped the game up with the fifth, and it
could have been two or three more in the last few minutes as
Newmarket put a stranglehold on Boston but were held at bay by
excellent goalkeeping from the net minder.
