Newmarket hit four
more to consolidate at the top
Another "home" game at
Ely, again under lights, with a 4.30pm start doing nothing for the
temperature! Newmarket players were thrilled to find their biggest
crowd (in numbers if not in height) of the season for what promised
to be a tough contest against one of their nearest opponents.
Once again, a quick
start helped to quell any Newmarket nerves, and the short corner
routine paid dividends for the umpteenth time, with a rasping goal
from the very edge of the area by William Wilson. Newmarket then had
to see-saw 20 minutes with excellent pressure applied to the
opposition, and the occasional lapse of concentration allowing the
threat of a breakaway by Cambridge South. Robert Horrocks played
well at the back, and good interchanging across midfield was
especially pleasing. The second goal came from a Penalty Flick, put
away by Wilson again, after a mad goalline scramble, the whistle
going for the decision just as the ball was eventually forced over
the line.
Chairman Colin Seakins
had an excellent game at the back throughout, and with good running
and passing movements throughout Newmarket kept up the pressure
which has seen so many goals in the last 4 weeks.
Just on the stroke of
half-time, the consistent Simon Greenwood thought he had scored that
elusive first goal for Newmarket, only to see the ball hit the
inside of the post and bounce to safety. He was almost distraught,
but a quick bit if bonding at the break meant he entered the second
period ready for action.
Into the second half,
and Cummins struck his only goal of the game, with another well
worked short corner, firing the ball into the far corner past a
despairing defence. With the crowd urging Newmarket to greater
heights, the fourth and final goal came (at last) to Greenwood, who
was on hand to push the ball over the line after more pressure from
Newmarket, who had come close through Cummins again, Starling,
Gibson and Young just prior to this historic moment.
No puns, no jokes, just
a good old fashioned battling win for Newmarket, who now just have
an away fixture before the Christmas break.
