Newmarket recovered
their composure and set the ball rolling for what they hope will be
another championship year with a good league win at Ely. They went
ne up against the Lincolnshire side with the sort of goal they have
been scoring all the previous year. After two minutes William Wilson
scored a cracker from the top of the "D" to put them at their ease.
To certain extent too
much so, as it took another 20 minutes or so before they scored the
second. A short corner was won and after a good stop by Dave Badcock
Wilson fired in his second.
Captain Greg Cummins
had handed the armband to Simon Greenwood, playing on honeymoon
after his marriage to Zena, and he nearly celebrated this with a
first half goal. However, the score remained 2-0 going into the
second half.
Wilson Jnr was again
involved in one of the best goals Newmarket have scored this season.
He sent an aerial pass from his own half which was picked up by
Simon Gibson on the right hand side. He took the ball on past one
man before pushing it through to Andy Levell who had made a good run
from the left. In turn, he quickly played the ball back to the top
of the "D" where Matt Holden struck home an excellent goal.
Wilson went on to
collect another hat-trick when he showed good reaction to scramble
in at the far post for the fourth goal. Barry Winters again played
well while he was on the pitch, goalkeeper Steve Freed has little to
do while Greenwood played well.

EHA Timpson Trophy
Shrewsbury Mixed 4 - 2 Newmarket Mixed
Newmarket travelled the
150 miles to Shrewsbury in the hope of progressing to the last 16 of
the E. H. A. Timpson Trophy mixed competition. They came away
knowing that victory should have been theirs, going down 4-2.
The squad were well
supported as always by Hazel and Ed, the travelling crowd, and
started like a steam train. Holden, Pope and Wilson all went close
in the first 10 minutes, although Pope, in particular, might have
had two but the ball did not find its way to him when he was in good
positions.
The Shrewsbury
goalkeeper played well throughout and Newmarket conceded a goal when
well on top. They picked up again and looked like equalising before
Shrewsbury had a second attack, and scored a second soft goal.
Newmarket showed great
spirit, and Pope scored before being extremely unlucky when rifling
a shot from a short corner against a post and then had another
effort disallowed.
In the second half
Newmarket's improved passing still failed to move the ball to great
effect as in the previous win over Harleston Magpies and they
conceded two more before a frantic last 10 minutes. Their second
came via Matt Holden and two more goals were both disallowed.
A 4-2 loss, three
disallowed goals and hitting a post spell out the frustration
expressed by captain Simon Gibson. "We knew it would be a good game
and with hindsight I believe two or three players would have played
a different game, and we really should have won" he said. "Having
said that, for a small club we have gone a long way in the
competition."
