Newmarket play like
champions - only 21 more games to go!
Taking heart not offence from the comments on their display at
Thetford, Newmarket began their league campaign with a win that
leaves them top!
Starting a series of four away league games, Newmarket travelled in
confidence, but with the belief that they should not take the
opposition lightly, having not played them in the last two
successful league season. A brightly worked move led to Matt Holden
winning a short corner after only 18 seconds, although the strike
was not what it might have been from Wilson Junior - he made up for
that as the game went on. Even so, within a couple of minutes,
Holden had put Newmarket ahead, with a great run and finish from the
top of the opposition "D". Soon, Paul "Geordie" Young had put some
clear water between Newmarket and Long Sutton with a good second,
and before half-time Newmarket were playing like champions they have
been for the last two season. Good play between Heath, Greenwood and
Gibson, and between Wilson Junior, Badcock and Holden ripped through
Long Sutton, and it was only a matter of time before another. The
third came from a short corner, using the same routine so successful
the week before, only this time resulting in Simon Gibson putting
the ball away at the post from Wilson Junior's otherwise wayward
shot. 3-0 at half-time.
The second half began with Long Sutton on the attack, but still
keeper Freed needed to do nothing other than keep concentrating, as
the defence was excellent in front of him, and he ended with only
one easy save in the whole match. Newmarket eventually put in a
fourth, with a Holden finish from a Geordie Young cross. Young ran
well throughout, tormenting the opposition in all areas of the final
third. Now for Wilson!
His first, Newmarket's fifth, was scrambled in, as was his second,
although thoroughly deserved after an excellent run, losing the ball
on the edge of the "D", then cleaning up amongst the Long Sutton
confusion.
Mark "Arsenal" Pears then dived headlong for a well deserved goal
coming on as substitute, and finally, from another short corner
routine, the old Gibson-Badcock-Wilson partnership secured a
hat-trick for Wilson Junior, and 8-0 for Newmarket.
Levell played well throughout on the left hand side, and Wilson
senior, despite being cautioned whilst off the pitch did well on it,
as did another substitute Duncan Freed. Captain Cummins, returning
from injury, was delighted, and Newmarket can now look forward to
the next 21 games, and the expectation of more success.
