Boy Barry on target as
Town score seven
Newmarket's third
league game this season brought them their third away win. They
thumped March with a barrage of first half goals in a game which
produced the first league goal for future star, 12-year-old Barry
Winters.
Inside two minutes, a
move down the right-hand side between Simon Gibson and Matt Holden
saw the ball forced into the D where Ian Starling punished the March
defence.
Despite long periods of
sustained pressure it was not until 20 minutes had elapsed that
Gibson again found space and from his own half took the ball to the
opposition D where he found Matt Holden. He then passed to Wilson
junior and it was 2-0.
Wilson scored his
second with a penalty flick a couple of minutes later and completed
a rapid hat-trick after good play from captain Cummins. Al Heath
played well as did the whole squad which was rotated to maximum
effect.
Just before the break,
Newmarket won another short corner and tried a different routine.
Gibson pushed the ball short to Holden who cracked the ball neatly
inside the near post.
Newmarket began the
second half in mean fashion and after only a few minutes good play
between Badcock, Wilson and Holden saw young Winters free inside the
D. He thumped the ball home for his first senior goal, much to the
delight of his team-mates.
Despite more pressure
Newmarket could find the net only once more, a crisp short corner
from Wilson Jnr taking the total to seven and his personal tally to
four.
Newmarket must continue
to build on their good start, and are away for an early start at
Wisbech Town III on Saturday. With 18 goals for and a sloppy two
against Newmarket comfortably lead Division 5 North West.
EHA Timpson Trophy
Newmarket Mixed 3 - 1 Saffron Walden Mixed
Simon Gibson led a
Newmarket Mixed XI at Ely for their first round match in the EHA
Timpson Trophy, a national competition of 123 mixed teams.
A solid squad of old
and new faces travelled for this "home" fixture, their first aim
being enjoyment, their second a win. Newmarket attacked from the off
and scored after only five minutes.
After good play around
the Walden "D" Dave Badcock scored the opener to settle any nerves.
Fifteen minutes later
Newmarket went into a comfortable looking 2-0 lead, with another
goal for Wilson Jnr; to supplement the four of the previous day. He
ran well throughout the game and was aided and abetted throughout by
Roger Wise, Matt Holden, Sarah Whiteside, Theresa Choat and Gail
McDonnell; who all had excellent games. At the back, Al Heath played
a blinder, and Ian Newham and Simon Gibson showed the value of their
experience.
In the second half
Newmarket continued to play the ball around well, only lapsing to
allow a Saffron Walden goal with 10 minutes to go.
However, Wilson,
following on from the normal short corner routine with Gibson and
Badcock, dispelled any last minute jitters with a thunderous goal to
send Newmarket safely into the second round on 5th December.
