Newmarket win again
Four away games, four away wins - a great start to the season.
However, Newmarket were rocked early on this time by a solid Wisbech
team, who took the lead in the seventh minute, with a goal taken
with the Newmarket defence in disarray. Goalkeeper Steve Freed had
no chance as the ball was moved around the "D", and Newmarket found
themselves one down, and not in control of any part of the game.
However, this early setback seemed to settle them into a better
rhythm, with good inter-passing and a vocal band of 4 travelling
supporters cheering them on. The equaliser came after only 14
minutes, a short corner pushed to Matt Holden on the angle, who
rifled the ball towards Geordie Young who glanced the shot past the
despairing Wisbech 'keeper. Newmarket then applied great pressure,
winning a rapid 6 short corners, but failing, unusually, to convert
even one. One all at the break was not a reflection of their play in
the latter stages, and they took the field confident for the second
half.
More attacking early on failed to force a goal which would have
settled the away team. However, after only 10 minutes, a great shot
from a short corner was stopped by a defender's foot on the line,
and Wilson Junior stepped up to resume his scoring ways with an
excellent penalty flick. In a fast, flowing, well umpired game,
Newmarket rarely lapsed after taking the lead, although when Wisbech
did attack, Al Heath, Rob Horrex and Simon Greenwood defended
admirably.
After a couple of substitutions, Mark Pears and Holden combined well
without adding to the score. Then, after 32 minutes of the second
half, Newmarket settled the game with a second goal for Young,
following up a Wilson effort. The Wisbech 'keeper played well
throughout, and probably saved his side from a bigger defeat.
Nevertheless, Wisbech provided a good test for Newmarket, ahead of
their first "home" game, Saturday at Ely, against Ely III.
