Newmarket must now go
for 10 in a row.
Despite some poor discipline (three Newmarket players received
cards, and they didn't say "Happy Birthday"), Newmarket rolled on to
their ninth victory in a row in the 1999/2000 league season. On the
excellent pitch at The Leys School, the away team struggled to find
their form early on, and it took all of 20 minutes for the first
goal to go in, courtesy of Captain Greg Cummins. This seemed to put
life into Newmarket, and although the Cambridge City forwards forced
the first of two fine saves from Steve Freed in the Newmarket goal,
they were kept at bay. Indeed, two goals in quick succession came
from Matt Holden and Simon Gibson, the latter following in after
fine work from Ian Starling.
At
half time, Newmarket held a comfortable looking 3-0 lead, and
started the second period buoyant. The fourth goal came after only a
minute or so of the restart. Holden scored the second of his three
for the day, and credit must go to Starling again for his
contribution. Turning poacher from provider, he scored the fifth,
before Wilson Junior added a sixth. With only seconds left on the
clock, Newmarket won a short corner. The whole team came to the edge
of the opposition "D", and Cambridge City expected a rush from
there. However, Gibson pushed the ball short to Holden, who fired in
from an acute angle.
Dave Badcock had another good game, although one or two other
performances were not up to the high standard Newmarket have now set
for themselves. Nevertheless, if the discipline can be kept, and the
free flowing movement retained, Newmarket must expect to beat St
Neots IV at home (Ely), on Saturday at 4.30pm.
