Ipswich II’s 2 – 3 Newmarket I’s
23/11/2019 Goalscorers: Donald x 2, Dawson

Newmarket escaped Ipswich with a  dramatic 3-2 victory thanks to a late Simon Donald strike that maintained their healthy form near the top of the Division 3NE.
Ipswich started really well and Newmarket hung on for the first 10 minutes. And it was the hosts who took the lead through a penalty corner from a deliberate Harrington foot, a firm strike from slip left into the bottom right corner.

Newmarket grew into the game, and drew a couple of good saves from the Ipswich keeper. Ipswich threw some dangerous aerials, but the defence of Wilson, Harrington, Newnes and debutant Tim Sale stood firm. On the occasion they were breached, second debutant David Worrall in goal made several important saves to go into half time a goal down.

Newmarket started the second half with the ball, which was played round the back and out to Wilson at left back, he played a one two with Andreou and fed Dawson at the top of the D, he played a one two with Skelton who drew the keeper before slotting into an empty net.
However, although Newmarket were now starting to dominate, Ipswich got away with several strong tackles in midfield before Wilson conceded possession outside the Ipswich 25, with Harrington out of position the Ipswich centre forward was pushed wide by Worrall before finishing from an acute angel.
Newmarket were now pushing for a second equaliser as Ollie Wade made a fine run from the left back, beating 4 men before finding Donald at the far post who took a touch and finished on his reverse. Skelton, Wade and Donald were outstanding in the middle, Dawson and Terrett were willing runners stretching the Ipswich defence.

Newmarket showed their mental strength, yet again, going up the other end 5 minutes from time, as Felix Allen won another penalty corner, Harrington slipped to Wilson to fed Donald to deflect in to take the lead for the first time in the game.

Ipswich committed many men forward for an equaliser overloading the D, but the defence, including a man of the match performance by Newnes, held firm for a hard fought victory against a very good Ipswich.

Newmarket L2 3 -2 Ely City 2s

The local derby that is any Newmarket team v any Ely team had another instalment this weekend. Ely played the better game for most of the match, Newmarket were 1-0 down by half time and 2-0 down with 20 minutes to go, and then they found themselves. A goal from a fully played short corner (one in first half had been halted by the umpire), one from open play, put Georgia Atherton and Molly Brown on the score sheet and in the last 90seconds a Lucie Swann signature dive under the keeper’s feet gave Newmarket a score to keep them second in the league with a game in hand. 3-2 to Newmarket. Well played to Ely for the determination shown.

MoM was shared between Tania Fisher for her consistent play and Lucie Swann for her save the day goal. DoD was Molly for late arrival…
