The Junior Section of the club accommodates boys and girls from 5 to 18 years of age. Junior training is every Sunday morning between 10:30am and 11:30am on the astroturf at Newmarket Leisure Centre. Training begins in September and goes through until Easter with a break for Christmas and half term holidays. Sunday morning sessions are mainly coaching based, except when matches/tournaments are arranged, and organised into age groups; U8, U10 and U14.
Junior training is primarily for players under 14, with older juniors (14-18 years) encouraged to train and play with the senior squads on Tuesdays 7:30-9:00pm (Ladies) or Wednesdays 7:00-8:30pm (Men). The junior hockey programme is managed by the Club’s Junior Coordinator, supported by a committed group of volunteer coaches and assistants.
Refreshments, changing facilities and toilets are available at the Leisure Centre (for more information, please see their website).
Could your child be the next great player to come through our ranks? No matter what their experience, whether they have played hockey before or not, they are more than welcome to come down, meet our coaches and try it out for themselves!
We do not currently play in a junior league but do organise regular friendly matches with other local clubs. Matches are generally split into age groups (U8s, U10s, U12s and U14s) – U8 and U10 teams are usually mixed. Matches are based on England Hockey the “Quicksticks” 4 a-side game for U8s. U10s, U12s and U14s play the England Hockey “In2Hockey” 7 a-side game, playing on half pitches.

What to Wear
Astroturf boots are recommended but generally we do not mind what you wear. Why not show off your smart NHC polo shirt and brand new socks! However, please ensure that you are wearing shin pads and a gum shield – these items must be worn by all U18s playing hockey, as stated in the England Hockey rules.
What to Bring
We strongly advise bringing a drink and a hockey stick (if you have one), although we do have spare sticks to lend out.
We have recently put forward a record number of junior players to the England Hockey JDC (Junior Development Centre), where they gain valuable coaching at County level and are assessed for the chance to play for their County with the JAC (Junior Academy Centre) and beyond. As a club, we have had a number of players in recent years making it through to JAC level and representing their Counties: Rory Podd (U14 Level), James Atkinson, (U15s) and Seth Bailey (U16s GK) are all young players who have worked hard and been honoured with the chance to represent their Counties. We are also pleased to be involved with the coaching side of proceedings, with Mel Podd managing the Cambridgeshire U14 Boys side. We support and encourage the England Hockey Single System (Long Term Athlete Development Pathway).
