Newmarket Hockey Club are very pleased to announce that goalkeeping coach Dan Brown will be running specialist GK sessions at the club for both junior and senior players this season. An ex-Newmarket player himself and highly qualified goalkeeping coach, Dan has since gone on to play at a higher level and we are delighted to welcome him back in a coaching capacity to share his experience and knowledge of the position.
Dates for GK training sessions are as follows:
We hope you have all enjoyed the school holidays and are looking forward to the start of the new hockey season.
We now have dates and details for the 2017-18 season which will start on Sunday 24th September. This is a bit later than normal due to the leisure centre hosting a triathlon event on Sunday 17th when we had originally planned to hold a club open day; as a result we have been informed there will be no car parking available. So the first junior training will take place on Sunday 24th September 10-12noon,
Due to the increased number of junior members we now have at the club we have decided to split training times on Sunday mornings for the coming season. This will give us more pitch space and allow us to run four age groups for the first time. Age groups are aligned to academic school years (i.e. based on a player’s age on 1st September) as requested by England Hockey. Groups and training times for the 2017-18 season will be as follows:
10-11am U8’s & U10’s
11-12noon U12s & U14s
Full details can be found on the club website here.
New for the coming season we have also entered U8, U10 and U12 teams into regular tournaments with twelve other Cambridgeshire clubs. If you look at the calendar on the club website you will see there are four dates for these throughout the season, including one which we will host at Newmarket on 3rd December. We have also entered an U14 team into a local development league which we hope will provide a few competitive fixtures throughout the season.
Also new for 2017-18 we will be offering some specialist goalkeeper training sessions throughout the season with Dan Brown, a national league GK. This will offer specific training for any current keepers plus allow anyone who wants to give goalkeeping a try the chance to do so. As soon as we have dates & times confirmed for this we will add details to the website.
Junior membership will again be £60 for the season and will include a club polo shirt and socks for all members who have paid their fees by 1st October. A junior membership form can be downloaded from the website here. Included on the membership form this year is the option to order a junior hoodie, this is at an additonal cost of £15 (£18 for an adult size).
Further information on junior membership is available in the new Junior Welcome Pack which can be downloaded from the website here.
We currently have space for new members so if you know of anyone who is keen to give hockey a go please feel free to pass on these details.
We look forward to seeing you all on 24th September. In the meantime if you have any questions please feel free to get in touch with me.
We have invited Barry Anderson (Level 3 National League Pool Umpire, Suffolk Pool Umpire) to come to talk about umpiring but using player management as his main topic,
Last season we had a number of incidents that could, with better use of player management, have been nipped in the bud and steered the game down a different route reducing the need for more serious intervention.
As we’re inviting Barry down to Newmarket as a club, we are looking at all captains, possibly vice captains and umpires to attend.
Date: Friday 8th September
Venue: The Racing Centre (Astley Club)
Please can you confirm, by Wednesday evening, to Vicky Benedikz directly so she can update Barry with the mix of people / numbers. We are looking for at least 15 people to attend.
Barry is happy to take questions about any aspect of umpiring in order to support the development of our club.
Newmarket Hockey Club
Newmarket Hockey Club bids you a very warm welcome to the 2017/18 season!!
Training is well under way for both the men’s and the ladies’ sections. Please see the website for details of changes to training and we look forward to seeing you there.
It’s now time for the boring paperwork and fees bit.
All members are required to complete a membership form, which can be downloaded from the here. We must have a form for each player every year for insurance purposes and to confirm that we have up to date contact details for emergencies.
Please can you start to get your subs in. Your subs need to go to Mel Podd, in an envelope with your name on it please. They can also be given to your captain or the Men’s and Ladies’ Reps, Andy and Di. Subs must be paid by the 30th September and you cannot play for the club after this date if you haven’t paid. Please refer any queries regarding payment to Mel directly.
Cash or Cheques payable to ‘Newmarket Hockey Club’.
Seniors (18 and over) £100.00
Student (Over 18 and in full time education) £75.00

Goalkeepers: Active Goalkeepers who provide their own complete goalkeeping kit will be exempt from subscription for the year, at the Club’s discretion.
New Players: All new players have 4 weeks to pay the relevant subscriptions, but cannot play league games for the Club until they have joined the Club.
New members who wish to play in the men’s or women’s teams will also be subject to a one-time sponsorship subsidised fee of £40 to cover the cost of kit. This amount should be added to the total subs fee due.
Non-Playing Training members: Seniors who wish to attend training on a regular basis but not play matches are still obliged to pay their full yearly membership subscription fee and complete a form.
Players who do not pay their subscriptions on time will be subject to an additional £20 fee and will not be able to play for the club or attend training until resolved. We therefore urge all members to pay on time to avoid this situation. Please speak to me directly regarding any issues.
If you could please print and complete your membership form, and put this in an envelope with your Subs and your name on, that would be greatly appreciated.
If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to speak to Mel by message or email. She will also be at the Tuesday night training every week.
Thanks and all the best for a cracking season!!
To reflect the promotion of the L1 last season, the coaching schedule of Newmarket Hockey Club has altered slightly:
Club pitch training will start on 8th Aug for L3, L4 at 7.30 – 8.30pm. L2, M2, M3 will be training from 8.30 – 9.30pm.
These sessions are planned and coaching goals are set. Please be warmed up ahead of start time to get full benefit from the session.
Pitch training for M1 & L1 will begin on 9th August at 7.00 – 9.00pm. The captains of these teams, or the appropriate rep, will be in contact with you if you are expected at this session. This will be ongoing throughout the season.
Preseason fitness training will continue on Tuesdays until 29th Aug.
L2, L3, L4, M2 and M3, who train on Tuesdays, will not be penalised if they continue at fitness over pitch training!
It is anticipated that M1 & L1, who are training on Wednesdays, will be able to cope with both fitness training on Tuesdays, and pitch elements, though we understand work/babysitters etc. may need some juggling. PLEASE contact your captain and keep communication up in this respect.
In September, M1 & L1 players will be approached to lend their experience and skills to pitch training on Tuesdays on a rota basis. A similar rota will be started for junior training which is expanding this year too. Players can learn much from other players and it is hoped the whole club will benefit from interaction across all training days.
Newmarket Hockey Club won the Braintree Mixed 7-a-side Tournament last weekend. Drawing their first game, the team tasted defeat in their second but subsequently went on an epic run of form and took maximum points from their next seven matches, beating hot favourites Chelmsford 2-1 and finally clinching the trophy in dramatic fashion on goal difference.
The squad: Dan ‘Mr Brown’ Brown, Di ‘Lady Di’ Farrell-Thomas, Grace ‘MFS’ Evans, Josh ‘J 2 the D’ Dawson, Jordan ‘Zee German One’ Newnes, Ollie ‘I’ve Played Prem B’ Wade, James ‘Tap Water’ Atkinson, Lydia ‘Lydj Meister’ Evans, Hayley ‘#nofilter’ Stoneman, Minnie ‘Mrs Brown’ Eve.
Starting on Tuesday 11th July at 7:30pm, and running for 8 weeks, we will be offering pre-season fitness sessions for all senior hockey players to ensure that all NHC teams are in the best shape possible heading into the new season.
This year is an exciting & important year for both the men & ladies, and so it goes without saying, that anyone already playing in the 1st Teams, or is pushing to be there, should try and make all the sessions, or at least as many as possible.
However, as mentioned above, ALL senior players are welcome to come along.
There will be a small charge for the entire 8 week fitness session, which will hopefully be in the region of £5.00, depending on numbers.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
I am pleased to attach the following to enable you to order any new playing kit you would like for the upcoming 2017/18 season.
