- Junior News – Great Performances at Junior Tournament

Dear Juniors,

Well done to all of the juniors who represented the club last Sunday in the tournament against Cambridge Nomads, St Ives and Saffron Walden and thanks to all of the volunteers that helped out on the day to make it a fun and successful day. There was some good hockey played and several winning scorelines which is even better! All age groups are definitely getting better at match play and this is something we will continue to build on in the New Year as we prepare for further tournaments later in the season.

There was a photographer from the Newmarket Journal at the tournament on Sunday so you might want to check today’s newspaper for a report and hopefully a few photos.

A reminder that this weekend is the last session before the winter hockey break. We want to encourage a festive theme so please come in your Santa hats, reindeer antlers, Christmas jumpers or with your hockey stick decorated with tinsel! There will be prizes for the best dressed! We then start back on Sunday 14th January with our first tournament of the New Year on 4th February at Cambridge City.

Club hoodies -a few people have asked about ordering a hoodie, we probably won’t put in another order until January now but if you would like a hoodie we need a completed order form and payment please. Download a form here.

- Junior News – Cambridge City Tournament

Dear Juniors,

I hope you all enjoyed the matches and tournament at Cambridge City on Sunday. It was fantastic to have over 50 juniors representing the club and playing some good hockey. We certainly noticed an improvement in each teams performance match by match. The U12 boys did exceptionally well to win two of their games and draw the third. Well done to all that took part.

This coming Sunday is training as normal and then on 3rd December we have another junior tournament and this time we are hosting the following clubs at Newmarket; St Ives, Saffron Walden & Cambridge Nomads. Matches will take place between 12-3pm. Exact times will be confirmed next week once I have the final schedule. There will be matches for U8’s, U10’s & U12s (I will also sneak the few U13 players we have into the U12’s teams on this occasion).
If you could please confirm your childs availability for 3rd December with Vicky on Sunday so we know how many teams we can field.

Playing Kit -the majority of you should now have your new kit and hoodies. If you havent received this yet and havent already spoken to me about it please let me know. If anyone else would like to order a hoodie you need to complete an order form here and return it along with payment please.

Finally a reminder that now the weather has turned a bit colder to make sure you bring plenty of layers to training and wear gloves and a hat if necessary.

- Junior Poster 2017/18

We have seen a massive increase in our junior membership over the last few years thanks in part to the success of the GB women and also the increase in the number of primary schools playing hockey. Whilst we are pretty much full at U8 & U10 age groups we do have some capacity at U12 and U14, particularly in the boy’s teams, but we can also take more girls as well. So why not come down to one of our Sunday morning sessions and give hockey a go? We are a very friendly club and except players of abilities. We have started playing in regular tournaments this year to give players that competitive experience before they hopefully move into senior hockey. We hope to see you there!

The session is open to everyone including complete beginners and we would love as many of you as possible to give it a go, it doesn’t mean you have to commit to playing in goal but why not give it a try!

We are planning to place a kit order next week so if you could please try to remember to bring subs and fully completed membership forms along to training this Sunday. A membership form can be downloaded here.

We have our first matches of the season coming up on Sunday 22nd October away at Thetford Hockey Club. There will be games for all age groups, with match times as follows:

- Juniors – Welcome to 2017/18 Season

Dear Juniors,

We hope you have all enjoyed the school holidays and are looking forward to the start of the new hockey season.

We now have dates and details for the 2017-18 season which will start on Sunday 24th September. This is a bit later than normal due to the leisure centre hosting a triathlon event on Sunday 17th when we had originally planned to hold a club open day; as a result we have been informed there will be no car parking available. So the first junior training will take place on Sunday 24th September 10-12noon,

Due to the increased number of junior members we now have at the club we have decided to split training times on Sunday mornings for the coming season. This will give us more pitch space and allow us to run four age groups for the first time. Age groups are aligned to academic school years (i.e. based on a player’s age on 1st September) as requested by England Hockey. Groups and training times for the 2017-18 season will be as follows:

10-11am       U8’s & U10’s
11-12noon   U12s & U14s

Full details can be found on the club website here.

New for the coming season we have also entered U8, U10 and U12 teams into regular tournaments with twelve other Cambridgeshire clubs. If you look at the calendar on the club website you will see there are four dates for these throughout the season, including one which we will host at Newmarket on 3rd December. We have also entered an U14 team into a local development league which we hope will provide a few competitive fixtures throughout the season.

Also new for 2017-18 we will be offering some specialist goalkeeper training sessions throughout the season with Dan Brown, a national league GK. This will offer specific training for any current keepers plus allow anyone who wants to give goalkeeping a try the chance to do so. As soon as we have dates & times confirmed for this we will add details to the website.

Junior membership will again be £60 for the season and will include a club polo shirt and socks for all members who have paid their fees by 1st October. A junior membership form can be downloaded from the website here. Included on the membership form this year is the option to order a junior hoodie, this is at an additonal cost of £15 (£18 for an adult size).

Further information on junior membership is available in the new Junior Welcome Pack which can be downloaded from the website here.

We currently have space for new members so if you know of anyone who is keen to give hockey a go please feel free to pass on these details.

We look forward to seeing you all on 24th September. In the meantime if you have any questions please feel free to get in touch with me.

- Junior Summer League 2017

Dear Parents,

It is with great pleasure that I as one of the main organisers for the event, invite all of the children of Newmarket Hockey Club to attend the 2017 Junior Summer League. This will run for six weeks commencing on Wednesday 6th June and finishing on 12th July. It will be at 18:00-19:00 each week.

The idea of it is to encourage the youngsters to have as much game time as possible and have a fun hour each week playing hockey. This will also help to keep them ticking over during these summer months. Whilst the proper season is finished, we as coaches feel it will be a benefit to the children to continue to play during the off months. We aim to play lots of small games each week and to make it as enjoyable as possible.

As is the same with the usual training sessions, they will need to have shin pads and a gum shield and if owned, bring their hockey stick. If not then there are sticks which we can provide for them to use during the session.

The cost of the summer league works out at £12 per child, which is payable at the first session they attend. This is £12 for the whole six weeks. This can be paid in either cash or by cheque made payable to ‘Newmarket Hockey Club’ preferably in an envelope with the child’s name on it for convenience.

If you think you will be attending one or more of the sessions, then please respond ASAP so teams can be organised and numbers confirmed. This will make it easier for us to decide how many coaches are needed etc.

Look forward to seeing lots of you there.

Kind Regards,
Ollie Trent

Junior Coach

- Week 22 Results – Big Wins for Men’s 1s & Ladies’ 3s

Men’s 1s: 7-2 win vs Lowestoft Railway 1 (Home)
(Dawson 3, B. Atkinson 2, Wade 2)

With the promotion charge all but over, skipper Matthew Holden took the opportunity to shuffle his pack and hand Will Frost his 1st Team debut, as well as giving young Ben Atkinson his first start. And they didn’t disappoint as Frost fed Ollie Wade on the run, who struck the ball straight at the keeper. As the ball rebounded, Atkinson was first to react to score his and the games first goal with a tap in from close range. 1-0.

It wasn’t long before Newmarket had scored their second as Josh Dawson raced past a static Lowestoft defender, with his trademark 3D skill, before striking the ball into the bottom left corner. 2-0.

The pressure told in the 25th minute as the navy and yellows went three ahead, with the clubs top goalscorer Ollie Wade drag flicking the ball into the top right corner. 3-0. Lowestoft responded well however, and piled the pressure on for the remainder of the half, but Newmarket held firm, down to some excellent defending by towns back four of Harry Bell, Jordan Newnes, Alex Andreou and Darren Jenkins.

But, 10 minutes later, Town got their 4th goal. Mark Pears slid the ball to the stick of Atkinson on the left wing, who burst past two Lowestoft players before taking aim from just outside the D and picking out Dawson at the far post to strike home. 4-0

Once the second half got underway, Newmarket wasted little time to make it 5-0, as Wade got his second through yet another short corner drag flick. The away side then managed to get a consolation goal in the 55th minute through a short corner of their own, which keeper Seth Bailey almost managed to save but only to see his save divert the ball into the goal. 5-1.

Two minutes later however and Frost was involved again, finding the unmarked Atkinson, with a sublime cross, in the centre of the D, to deflect the ball into the roof of the net. 6-1

But it was Josh Dawson who took the plaudits, completing his hat-trick by sprinting through on goal and striking the ball through the keepers legs to make it 7. Through some sloppy last minute defending however, the visitors managed to capitalise to add a second and ending the game at 7-2.

Men’s 2s: 0-4 loss vs Harleston Magpies 4 (Away)

In stalwart goalkeeper Martin McCourt’s last game for the club, Town succumbed to a 0-4 defeat away to Harleston Magpies. Somewhat fittingly, the weather was decidedly Scottish for the duration of the match, the pitch being lashed with rain and wind throughout. The scoreline doesn’t really tell the story of the game as Newmarket missed a flick at 0-2 and had a dubious one awarded against them at 0-3, but the Blue & Yellow machine played well to a man and enjoyed the match as always. The Division 5 victory parade goes marching on.

Men’s 3s: Friendly – 2-1 win vs Cambridge South 4 (Home)
(H. Frost 2)

Newmarket M3s rounded off their first season with their 13th win of the campaign, 2v1 over Cambridge South 4s. Newmarket were missing 3 or 4 players through injury and call ups and our first half showing reflected this with a disjointed performance, where South looked as likely to score as Newmarket.
Fortunately Newmarket struck first when Henry Frost crept in at the back post to tap home. HT 1v0 to Newmarket.
In the second half Newmarket looked a lot better, they regained their shape, passes became more accurate and the defense solidified. The game was increasingly played in Souths half and the when the second goal came it was no more than they deserved. It came via the stick of Frost again who again deflected home from close range. South pulled one back with the final shot of the game, but it was too little too late.
It has been an outstanding first season for the Mens 3s with 13 wins from their 20 games. The team came together with the aim of nurturing youth and giving them experience before passing them up through the teams. To this aim we have been a great success with 6 youngsters starting in the 3s before stepping up to play for the higher teams. In addition we have put in a league campaign that saw us very unlucky to miss out on promotion and have nurtured and maintained an excellent team atmosphere through out.

Ladies’ 1s: 1-2 loss vs St Neots 1 (Away)
(L. Evans)

Ladies’ 2s: 0-5 loss vs Cambridge City 4 (Home)

Ladies 2s, another match that has flown by without a win but we stayed strong against City 4s and challenged them when they became tired and out done, there was still no goal that came from this but plenty of opportunities as we carried the ball towards their D, with the score being 3-0 at half time we realised we were lacking in communication and formation, City had messed with us but with a stern talk at half time we were back on thinking terms. Graceful, elaborate and delicate, there was some great passing up the line and running by Olivia Haste and Laura Excell who committed themselves to the game and with Laura receiving man of the match. With the final whistle blown and the defenders standing in position for a short corner there was no way that the ball was going in the back of the goal, with the keeper Jersey Bennett living up to expectation the shot was defended and the game was over with the final score of 5-0.

Ladies’ 3s: 4-0 win vs Ely City 3 (Home)
(Smith 2, Excell, Dryland)

Saturday saw the girls take on Ely 3s. The ladies were buoyed from their game the previous week and hoping to carry that spirit on into this game.
The game started well for Newmarket, with good possession, passing and positioning. But as in previous weeks, the goals were hard to come by, despite plenty of opportunities. The stale mate was broken after a series of back to back short corners.
The ladies went into half time 2-0 up and were pleased with their performance.
The second half start well, with sub Gabi on pitch now, and a few other team changes. Newmarket continued to dominate play. A further two goals week to be had out of the second half. One notably for Jane Dryland, her first of the season.  The others were 2 for Laura Smith and 1 for Laura Excell.
Man of the match went to Sophie Bell again for her outstanding play at right back.
Teddy was awarded to Laura Excell for missing a perfect baseline cross ball.
Next week sees the ladies away to Cambridge South to play their 3rd team at 3pm.

Ladies’ 4s: 0-5 loss vs Ely City 2 (Away)

Juniors: Tournament at Ely City Hockey Club

The Juniors attended a tournament this weekend. U10s entered 3 teams and competed in 6 competitive matches against teams from March and Ely. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves playing with mixed results across the teams.

The U13s entered 3 teams, 1 boys team and 2 girls teams competing in matches against Ely, St Ives and March. The prospect for the future is bright for Newmarket Hockey Club who see the last junior training next Sunday 10-11.30 for their end of season matches and awards.

For photos of this event, make sure to check out the Junior section in our Galleries area.
