- Ladies 1’s On Song For League Win

Newmarket Ladies 1’s v Peterborough 3’s 7-0 win to Newmarket
Scorers: Claire McDonnell 1, Di Thomas 3, Zoe Bailey 2, Beth Wombwell 1.
A busy weekend of hockey for Newmarket ladies first team; their first of two games was against bottom of the league Peterborough 3’s. Town were keen to dispel memories of recent results and needed to work as a team to get more league points.
From the off it was clear that Newmarket had the upper hand; whilst conserving energy the play was still attack minded and it was only a matter of time before the first goal went in for Newmarket – courtesy of Claire McDonnell who fired home after a weaving run down the right.
Newmarket’s second goal followed just five minutes later – Hayley Stoneman combined with McDonnell who then slipped a ball to Di Thomas – she casually netted reverse side.
The visitors were playing some solid hockey and with plenty of youth players, were demonstrating good resilience.
The break gave Newmarket Coach Chris Evans the chance to encourage his team to extend their lead and his players did not disappoint in the second half.
With a barrage of shots going towards the Peterborough goal there was no doubt that Newmarket would capitalise. Beth Wombell expertly picked up her own rebounding shot to get Town their third.
Fantastic work from Jazz Wombwell and Tania Fisher down the right gave Zoe Bailey a glimpse at goal; Bailey sprinted yards to make the vital touch to tip the ball over the line, although gained a few bruises from her commitment.
Beautiful link up work from Jenny Richards and Gail McDonnell down the left split the Peterborough midfield. Passing centrally through Isabel Hooley who then parried wide right. After a cutting cross from Bailey; Thomas got her second – a sweep shot rolling through the keeper’s legs.
A déjà vu moment as Bailey got her second in very similar fashion to her first – another superbly timed run leaving her to beat the defenders and travel the ball over the line.
After continual pressure on the Peterborough goal, Thomas got her hatrick after she reverse flicked a rebounded shot.
Newmarket were in total control at the final whistle – the final score being 7-0. A mention must go to Jess Boyle in the Newmarket goal; despite having little to do she made a couple of excellent saves and she continues to show experience beyond her short time playing in the position. Also Claire McDonnell for setting up virtually every goal.

- ‘Peri’ Good Game Despite Not Winning

Newmarket 3’s v Spalding: 3-1 win to Spalding

Newmarket lost no time in rescheduling this cancelled match from last week, and the weather had certainly taken a turn for the better. The match started well with Newmarket pushing towards the Spalding goal. Spalding soon retaliated and the Newmarket defence struggled to get the ball out of the D, before long Spalding scored their first goal and shortly followed it with a second. Newmarket became more determined not to be stuck defending the goal and attacked more vigorously for the rest of the first half, Spalding’s defence prevented most efforts from entering their D. It wasn’t until almost half time that Newmarket player Peri Green carried the ball from one end of the pitch to the other and scored with support from fellow player Nikki Cole. Newmarket started the second half with hope of a recovery, but still the Spalding defence Kept Newmarket away from their goal and even managed another one for themselves half way through the second half . Player of the match was well earned by Peri Green, and promising performances were shown by Fiona Milton a recent newcomer to the club and Jade Atkinson who played goal having only recently turned 13.

- Dip In Form Continues To Put League Bid Under Threat

Newmarket Ladies’ 1’s v’s Cambridge University 3’s: Cambridge Uni won 3-1.

Newmarket Ladies 1st team faced Cambridge University 3rd team for a rescheduled league game which had a massive impact on their title campaign.

Cambridge have shown a springboard improvement since the Christmas break and Newmarket were prepared for a tough fight for points despite missing a key player.
The University side were on fine form from the opening whistle looking sharp on the ball. Within 5 minutes they had had several shots on goal with a superb right-hand overlap producing a textbook goal.

Newmarket are used to conceding early and remained calm looking to get one back. Fine work from Gail McDonnell and Isabel Hooley at the back ensured that Jess Boyle was not overwhelmed by opposition in front of goal and Jazz Wombwell also showed excellent commitment in tracking back with lose players.

The newly laid Cambridge pitch was incredibly bouncy with both teams finding it hard to get the ball under control; however Cambridge had the edge on this and had the confidence to pass the ball around. With a lovely central maneuver Cambridge scored again giving Newmarket an even tougher challenge.

Town battled on and started to relax into new positions and worked as a unit. Beth Wombwell found herself with acres of space and galloped up the field with the ball. She unselfishly passed to Di Thomas who belted the ball into the goal from mid range 10 minutes before the end of the half.

Again the University side were swift to gain control after the break however Newmarket were able to read their passes now and Hayley Stoneman was quick to react when Cambridge struggled under pressure. Stoneman played a lovely ball up field to Zoe Bailey, she darted round a defender and shoved a ball towards goal. Her shot trickled within a foot of goal and was saved on the line by a defender. Another unlucky attempt fell to Stoneman who hit the post on a shot corner re-bound.

Cambridge were hungry to secure 3 points as they continued to push forward. They were awarded for their determination with another close range goal putting the game to bed.

Newmarket still find themselves at the top of the league due to other teams still yet to play postponed fixtures and with a dip in form since Christmas their title win is under threat as they have 4 tough league games still to play. Next week they face bottom of the league opposition Peterborough 3’s at home so they hope to put in a solid performance to secure some points.

- Ladies 1’s Face Second Defeat of the Season

Newmarket Ladies 1’s vs. Cambridge South 1’s: 2-1 win to Cambs South
After last week’s emphatic win Newmarket ladies 1st team suffered a bitter defeat against the league’s 6th placed team Cambridge South.
Having played this team twice already and winning convincingly 8-1 on both occasions Newmarket should have been able to secure 3 points comfortably but this was not to be.
It took Cambridge South only 5 minutes to unlock the Newmarket defence – they scored from a mid D shot after a break down the right wing.
Newmarket heads already began to hang and instead of upping the level, the team failed to convert promising moves. Cambridge South’s confidence continued to grow as Newmarket looked behind the play leaving their oposition unmarked.
Against the run of play Newmarket were awarded a flurry of short corners and Claire McDonnell smashed a ball into goal to give Town a glimmer of hope. This injected some fighting spirit into her team mates and for the final passage of the first half Newmarket looked in control of the situation.
Alas, this did not continue into the second half; Cambridge South came out motoring and again scored within minutes of first touching the ball. Newmarket were again thrown into disorder and could not get the ball into goal despite some good build up play. Newmarket fought hard towards the end of the game but time ran out for Town and they lost for only the second time this season.
This leaves them just 2 points clear at the top of the table with some tough opposition ahead. Next week they have a crunch Cup match against Wisbech as the winners of the game will go on to the League Cup Final.

- Six Goals Against St Ives

Newmarket ladies first team showed top form as they overturned bottom of the league St Ives – 6-1 last Saturday.
Pre match jitters appeared when 3 of the Town players were struggling with illness but were determined to play on for the good of their team.
St Ives started the game but immediately lost possession after Claire McDonnell made a fine tackle. The visitors struggled to find space as Newmarket players were marking tightly and seizing any loose balls. Space began to appear for Town allowing them to head goal-wards. The first shot was from Hayley Stoneman who narrowly missed the target. The first goal was created from a short corner. The initial strike failed to find the back of the goal but Di Thomas was in front of keeper and used her trade mark reverse stick flick to take Town in front.
Looking the stronger of the two teams Newmarket were beating St Ives on all areas of the field. Again using the space down the wing Lydia Evans crossed to McDonnell who found Thomas on the P spot – she casually slotted the ball home.
Not letting their heads go down, St Ives batted on and after an un-tackled run their central striker powered a shot in to goal taking it to 2-1. A disappointing goal that caught Town off guard.
The next goal was crucial for both teams and thankfully it was Newmarket who took the opportunity – Di Thomas completing a hat-trick after a string of accurate passing from the team, she managed to slot the ball between the keeper’s legs.
With a two goal lead this did not feel enough for Newmarket, as St Ives are known for fighting hard regardless of the score.
The second half was a chance for Newmarket to give the crowd more to cheer about. Now looking totally controlled Town were able to relax and fully work as a unit to score again. Gail McDonnell and Jazz Wombwell were able to move up the field from defence to get involved in the action. Jenny Richards used her calm intellect on the ball and passed to Isabel Hooley – the ball was now pinging round the D and the pinpoint shot came from Claire McDonnell who converted through a shot that found the bottom right hand corner.
Next to find a true strike was ‘goal machine’ Lucy Brown she broke clear from her defender to meet the ball perfectly and deflect into the net.
Jess Boyle still had some work to do in the Newmarket goal and despite it being infrequent she was alert to the challenge and dealt with it calmly.
The last high pace move started centrally from Stoneman. She worked with Fayers to move up field. Again providing a text book cross – McDonnell passed to Thomas who bundled the ball over the line ahead of her defender to add a fourth to her tally just before the final whistle. Next week Newmarket play local rivals Cambridge South who sit sixth in the league, at home. All supporters welcome.

- New Year Win For Ladies 1’s!

Newmarket Ladies 1’s v Rutland Ladies’ 1’s: 3-1 win to Newmarket

After a close battle pre-Christmas Newmarket were prepared for a youthful Rutland side in the League Cup competition.
With a full Newmarket side the team started confidently and made some big tackles to turn the play goalwards. It took a little time for both teams to settle, play also looked a little rusty but Town began to move up a gear.

Lydia Evans and Angel Fayers showed great movement on both sides of the pitch giving room for Isabel Hooley and Claire McDonnell to drive the ball forward. It took 25 minutes for Town to score – Hayley Stoneman finding the target after her own shot rebounded on a shot corner.
Leading 1-0 at half time Newmarket were looking to stay in control and justify their top of league position. The second goal came from Di Thomas who sneaked a ball inside the right post after a good central build up from Jenny Richards.
It was then Rutland who picked up a gear. After a surging right sided run, a skillful forward player slapped a ball into goal. Nerves were now jangling and when a ball hit a Newmarket player’s foot preventing a Rutland goal – a penalty flick was awarded. Jess Boyle stood strong and guessed the direction of the shot, keeping Town in front – it also gave her the Player of the Match Award. Newmarket were encouraged by this and after a Rutland short corner broke down Zoe Bailey seized the opportunity to move the ball quickly to Angel Fayers. She crossed the ball to Claire McDonnell who found Beth Wombwell; with no hesitation she swept firmly into goal to compete an exquisite move. This was to be the final goal, the score remaining 3-1. The team are still unbeaten in the Cup Competition and are aiming for the final at the end of March.

- Ladies 1’s Back To Winning Ways

Newmarket Ladies 1’s v Rutland 1’s: 2-1 win to Newmarket
After a two week break of match play Newmarket were apprehensive about facing an on form Rutland side. This certainly showed as Town were on the back foot and failing to find each other. As momentum built, so did their confidence in new positionings. Despite this Rutland scored first from a strong right side maneouver. Again Newmarket had the task of playing catch up as in other recent games. The team showed commendable resilience as they fought right from the defence to the forward line. Finally they were rewarded with an equaliser; Hayley Stoneman drilling a ball along the back line for Di Thomas who shadowed the keeper to flick into the bottom left corner of goal.
The half time whistle left the game on an even keel and Newmarket welcomed the opportunity to re-start the game and looked ultra confident. This continued with the back line looking fearless and the midfielders tracking their players. Stoneman took control in the centre, drove to the D and weaved her way past 3 players to shoot past the stranded keeper. At the other end Jess Boyle had to make some top class saves which earned her Player of the Match. There was a break in Newmarket’s dominance of possession which produced some heart stopping moments but Jazz Wombwell, Isi Hooley, Gail McDonnell and Tania Fisher shred out the defensives duties to stop any shots.
The last play of the game was a short corner to Rutland, they had a clear shot at goal but they did not hit the target and was parried off the back line to end the game.
Newmarket face the same team in the cup competition next week and hope for the same outcome.

- 1st Team Finally Beaten

Ladies 1’s v’s Wisbech 2’s: 6-1 win to Wisbech
Newmarket were hit hard with their first defeat of the season to Wisbech.
It took Wisbech just 2 minutes to get on the score board finding the bottom right hand corner. Newmarket looked flustered as they struggled to gel in unfamiliar positions.
Newmarket began to settle and looked the stronger of the two sides and a goal finally went in after 17 minutes, Angel Fayers getting the final touch. From then on the game looked a little weak with both teams struggling to work as a unit. Newmarket had two great goal chances that could have given them the mental edge they needed but they were unlucky – hitting the post and the ball rolling slightly wide. Wisbech scored again just before half time but Newmarket still had faith they could come back at them.

Unfortunately Wisbech grew stronger in the second half and were playing a very physical game. Newmarket were unable to link with each other allowing Wisbech to make quick breaks unchallenged. They scored a further four times from close range, decimating Newmarket’s hopes of an unbeaten season. A few chances fell to Town but again they were unlucky with shots glancing the post. They hope for a more even game when they face Wisbech at home.

Newmarket now have 2 weeks without a game – this will give chance for reflection on their defeat, but thankfully they still have an 8 point cushion at the top of the league.

- Another Big Win For Ladies 1’s!

Newmarket Ladies 1’s v Peterborough Ladies 3’s: 8-0 win to Newmarket

Newmarket put on a solid performance against a young Peterborough side last weekend.
From the off Newmarket dominated possession and were quick to make tackles forcing Peterborough into their defending D.
Isabel Hooley and Jazz Wombwell were quick to mob up and spilled balls at the back. Sue Bullimore in goal had little to do but was still constantly on her toes communicating with the defense.
From a scrappy section of play Newmarket managed to prod over the line courtesy of Lucy Brown.
Tania Fisher, Gail and Claire McDonnell were virtually unstoppable, not allowing anything to get through midfield. Claire McDonnell was next to strike, retrieving her own re-bound to slot home. Hayley Stoneman was also on target and hit in from top D.
Excellent leg work kept Martha Crowhurst ahead of her opposition; she was a constant threat down the wing. She provided a cross for Claire McDonnell to get her second bringing Town to 4-0 at half time.
Hungry for more Newmarket were looking to double their score in the second half and on form Lucy Brown got another 3 in quick succession, a sweep, a mid D shot and a deflection.
Jenny Richards and Zoe Bailey were looking strong down either side of the pitch allowing Newmarket to free-flow with the ball with no danger of letting their lead slip.
Peterborough showed a lot of promise and did occasionally catch Newmarket off guard; despite this the game was firmly in Town’s control. Newmarket’s final goal came from Di Thomas who made contact with a cross to sweep home giving Newmarket an 8-0 win.

- Another Top Of The League Performance!

Newmarket ladies 1’s v’s Sawtry ladies: 4-1 win to Newmarket
With Newmarket sitting pretty at the top of the league table they were hopeful of extending their points advantage when facing 7th placed Sawtry. With the weather being unseasonably warm again Newmarket were looking to let the ball do the work. Unfortunately this put Town on the back foot from the off as Sawtry were driving the ball wide making searing runs into the D. They were first to score from close range leaving Newmarket with plenty of work to do.
Sawtry’s early exertions became evident as the game settled and this was when Newmarket began to gel and play their familiar passing game. As in previous weeks Claire McDonnell was first to hit the target – a beautiful sweep from mid D, lifting high. With a slight shakey moment where Sawtry looked for payback Jazz Wombwell reacted, easily taking the ball from the driving winger.
Now with plenty of space to manoeuvre Newmarket looked slick and Martha Crowhurst used her pace and skill to her advantage on the wing slotting a ball to Di Thomas to end a textbook move for Town with a tap in.
At the other end Sue Bullimore made an outstanding save as she had to stretch to capacity to meet a lifting ball, patting away from goal then expertly cleared by Gail McDonnell. Half time came during a lul in the game and Newmarket were now focused on extending their narrow lead.
Town looked the fresher of the two teams in the second half – particularly Hayley Stoneman who dominated the centre, and was great support to the defence. Sadly Kat Burrell was taken down in the midfield but had shown superb commitment in tackles throughout her time on the field.
Newmarket were eager to break again and Claire McDonnell struck again from mid D giving Town the lift they needed. From this point on Newmarket had the game secured. Another piece of fine teamwork down the right gave Thomas her second of the game – starting with a skillful run from Tania Fisher, linking with Crowhurst who crossed to Thomas who then fired a shot from top D.
The visitors had little to reply with as both teams started to flag from the heat and the game ended with the majority of possession being Newmarket’s, the score being 4-1.
