- Week 16 Results – Double Header Sees M2s Win Big and L4s Victorious in Derby

Saturday:

Men’s 1s: 3-5 loss vs Norwich City 3 (Away)
(Bell, Green, Skelton)

Newmarket Men’s 1s were unfortunate in defeat to table-topping Norwich City 3s this Saturday. Town started strongly and played some great hockey in the first 20 minutes, taking the lead through Mike Skelton. However City replied almost instantly after a dubious short corner and soon after took the lead. This seemed to dishearten Newmarket a bit and the away side struggled to regain their foothold, going in at the break 3-1 down.

After half time Town put in a noble effort but City eventually put the game beyond doubt following a flurry of counter attacks and short corners. Harry Bell and Rob Green were on target for Newmarket to set up a grandstand finish, but City ran out 5-3 winners, deserving of the result but not perhaps the magnitude of the scoreline.

Men’s 2s: 10-1 win vs Ipswich Cranes 1 (Home)
(Blades 5, Bunker 2, Harrington 2, Trent)

When darkest Ipswich calls and top 4 opposition blocks the advance of Newmarket’s hidden treasures, what’ll make the difference? Men in tights! And Newmarket had one: a magic Mike. Strength in depth helped too (not to mention chances taken).
IES 2 – Newmarket 3. Lionhearts, oh Lionhearts. Well done boys.
But that was last week, and your correspondent was sad to miss it.
Not this week ‘though, as those Lionhearts more Ipswich men did face. Brave Cranes, decimated by defections, and no match for the men in yellow. No tights this week, but the backboard sang. Not a solo that, but rather a choir! Bunker The Pace 2; Harrington The Inimitable 2; Trent The Almost joined in…. 1; and Buddha The Blade got 5 (yes 5).
Newmarket 10 – Ipswich Cranes 1, and in the distance that ever so faint song: na-na-naaa-na, na-na-naaa-na, na-na-na-na-na-na. M2s march on.

Men’s 3s: 1-4 loss vs I-ES 6 (Home)
(Wilson)

Ladies’ 1s: 1-5 loss vs Colchester 1 (Away)
(G. Evans)

Newmarket Ladies’ 1s went down 5-1 in the away leg of their double header against Colchester this weekend. Although Grace Evans was on target for the Town, the home side proved too strong and their quality told come the final whistle.

Ladies’ 2s: 0-6 loss vs Sudbury 2 (Away)

Ladies’ 3s: 1-1 draw vs Bury St Edmunds 4 (Home)
(Hansgate)

Ladies’ 4s: 2-1 win vs Ely City 3 (Away)
(Asker, Howe)

Sunday:

Ladies’ 1s: 1-2 loss vs Colchester 1 (Home)
(Farrell-Thomas)

Ladies’ 3s: 1-4 loss vs Huntingdon 2 (Away)
(Swann)

Men’s 3s: 4-1 win vs Bury St Edmunds 6 (Home)
(Booth 3, Walker 1)

Men’s 1s: 2-2 draw vs Ipswich 2 (Home)
(Pears, Skelton)

Newmarket Men’s 1s battled to a hard-fought 2-2 draw at home to Ipswich 2s and were pleased to welcome back creative midfielders Ollie Wade and Mike Skelton from injury. Despite the Christmas layer of mince pies and turkey covering the frames of Newmarket’s favourite twelve sons, Town started strongly and soon found themselves creating a number of golden chances. It was through one of these that Skelton struck the home side into the lead, a clinical counter attack and smooth team move that sent the assembled hordes into raptures.

However, Ipswich grew into the game and replied soon after; a passage of sloppy Town play saw the ball played in behind and drilled past keeper Iain Robinson for 1-1. Not to be deterred, Newmarket soon struck again through Mark Pears who was afforded a rare run out up front – a task he took to with great gusto.

After the break, Robinson produced a number of smart saves but was forced to scoop the ball off the backboard for a second time as a low short corner effort bamboozled the defence and nestled home for 2-2. The game began to break down a little as both teams began to tire and pick up the odd card, before the contest fizzled out with the number of Newmarket walking wounded forcing them to settle for the draw. While both teams had chances to win the game, especially late on, it was widely accepted that a draw was the fairest result.

Men’s 2s: 3-2 win vs I-ES 5 (Away)
(Blades, Trent, Wood)

Newmarket Men’s 2s stormed to a 3-2 victory away to mid-table Ipswich – East Suffolk on Saturday. Strikes from Lee Blades, Ollie Trent and skipper Drew Wood were enough to see off a valiant challenge by the home side and ensure Town remain top of the pile and 2 points clear of high-flying Watton.

Men’s 3s: P-P vs Ipswich 4 (Home)
(Match postponed due to frozen pitch)

Ladies’ 1s: P-P vs Dereham 1 (Home)
(Match postponed due to frozen pitch)

Ladies’ 2s: 5-1 win vs Haverhill Ladies 2 (Away)
(Beeton, Cockerill, Farrell-Thomas, Fox, Freed)

On a frosty morning that saw many games called off around the leagues, Newmarket Ladies’ 2s were very impressive in a convincing 5-1 win away to Haverhill Ladies. Goals from Vicky Beeton, Tracy Cockerill, Di Farrell-Thomas, Hannah Fox and Jazz Freed showed that Town are no one-woman team and are quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in Division 4NW(S).

- Week 14-ish Results – Men’s 1s Go Down 3-1 in Last Game of 2017

Men’s 1s: 1-3 loss vs Norwich Dragons 3 (Away)
(Bell)

Newmarket Men’s 1s went down by 3 goals to 1 in the club’s last fixture of what has been a very positive year for NHC. Their squad heavily depleted by injuries, Town travelled with a bare 11 players and welcomed youngsters Ollie Trent and Jonny Bunker into the team to join Ben Atkinson in the youth contingent. Captain Jordan Newnes also shuffled his pack, switching full backs Darren Jenkins and Louis Hrebeniak to opposite sides and pushing Harry Bell into midfield alongside the ever-present Chris Leggett. James Atkinson, in his final game for the club this season, was moved to the left side of midfield to accommodate Bunker starting up front and Rob Green fulfilling the eponymous ‘Skelton role’.

Newmarket started well and perhaps had the best of things early on, but after 20 minutes they were undone by a quick turnover in the middle and a fast counter in behind centre halves Newnes and Will Wilson – the chance finished well past visiting keeper Iain Robinson. Soon after, Dragons increased their lead – a dubious tackle on Wilson resulted in an easy opportunity for 2-0 which gave Robinson no chance. To add insult to injury, Newmarket were reduced to 10 men and lost Wilson to a hangover straight after.

Following half time, Robinson was forced into action early and produced a string of outstanding saves that would later win him a deserved man of the match. However, the Town resistance was broken once more when Hrebeniak misjudged his weight of pass in midfield and Dragons again executed a clinical counter attack to bring the score to 3-0. Not disheartened, Newmarket adopted a 2-0-9 formation and entertained themselves by chatting to (or in some cases, up) the opposition and passing the captain’s armband around. This ploy clearly worked as Bell fired home from a short corner and Town were desperately unlucky to see a deflected shot hit the post late on – a goal that would have really set up a grandstand finish. However, the final whistle blew with Dragons running out 3-1 winners in a good-tempered occasion that results in Newmarket only having one ‘double header’ in January.
