Ladies 2’s Edged By City

The ladies 2s took on Cambridge City Ladies 2s in their last pre-season friendly at home on Saturday in some very summer-like conditions! Sarah Ganiford stepped up as captain due to Nikki Boyle being out with an injury still. It was an evenly fought game for the most part although Cambridge sneaked in the first goal, narrowly getting the ball past Newmarket keeper Sue Bullimore. It wasn’t long before Newmarket got a real chance to even the score sheet with a penalty flick awarded to them. Clodie Rolph stepped up to the challenge but the Cambridge City keeper saved it, leaving Cambridge still in the lead towards the end of the first half. Loren Davenport wasn’t messing around however and from a good run down the left wing, she fired the ball through the Cambridge keeper’s legs, making it 1-1 going into the second half. There were some good saves from Sue Bullimore in the Newmarket goal and she was supported in defence by Mel Podd and Anna Parker. The 4-4-2 formation will take the Newmarket side some getting used to and they need to work on keeping the shape on the pitch. However, there was some great play all round and the second goal from Cambridge City was unfortunate for Newmarket as the final score left them trailing 2-1. Grace Evans, Verity MacMahon and Donna Keates worked well together in the centre and were supported by Rachel Allen and Maddy Rule in the midfield. Next week the ladies 2s take on the Cambridge City 3’s team next weekend.
