- Week 2 Results: Late Drama Wins First Point for Ladies’ 1s as M1s Perform Away

Men’s 1s: 5-1 win vs Ipswich 2 (Away)
(Dawson 2, Skelton 2, J. Atkinson)

Newmarket Men’s 1s put in a sublime performance away from home this Saturday to take home all 3 points and engineer a commanding scoreline. Without key defensive figures in Darren Jenkins, goalkeeper Iain Robinson and skipper Jordan Newnes due to Jenkins getting married (congratulations Dazzler & Emma!!), stand-in captain Chris Leggett could have been forgiven for thinking that a long afternoon was ahead for the boys in yellow and blue. In fact, nothing could have been further from the truth. Newmarket knocked the ball around superbly from minute one and created a number of opportunities before midfield wizard Mike Skelton finally drove the ball into the D and forced a defender to put through his own backboard to break the deadlock. The goals then began to flow and the makeshift backline of Mark Pears, Ollie Wade, Will Wilson and Louis Hrebeniak found themselves largely untroubled as James Atkinson and the superb Josh Dawson both struck. The fourth was a superb team move, Hrebeniak securing the ball from a Wilson jab tackle and working it right via Leggett to Matt Holden – the wisest man on the pitch did some “passing and dribbling and stuff, it’s easy really” before finding Skelton, who squared to Dawson for a simple reverse stick finish, capping off a fantastic team passing move. Ben Atkinson was superb down the left hand side and forced the final goal, another defender deflecting a Skelton shot over his own goal line as he spotted B. Atkinson arriving late. Ipswich were able to grab a late consolation goal past goalkeeper Seth Bailey who had made a couple of important saves early on when the game was still in the balance but found himself a spectator for the most part. The final word should go to the opposition keeper who was in top form and without him the score could quite easily have been far higher.

Ladies’ 1s: 0-0 result vs Dereham 1 (Away)
(Alderson)

In their second match of the season, Newmarket Ladies’ 1s faced Dereham Ladies 1st Team. It was a competitive match from the start as Newmarket, playing with energy, soaked up Dereham’s attacks and pushed forward to put their defence under pressure. Newmarket’s defence held strong as Dereham had numerous short corners and young goalkeeper Jersey Bennett made some crucial saves that kept the score 0-0 come half time. Newmarket went into the second half with a positive state of mind and had several attacks, but no luck on goal. Dereham finally made the short corners count with a drag flick from a short that was slipped right. Newmarket didn’t let their heads drop as they continued to push and won a short corner with seconds left of the match; only their second penalty corner all day. Newmarket’s Grace Evans broke the line early and subsequently received a green card and was sent off. With the final whistle now gone, Newmarket re-took their penalty corner: Faye Andreou slipped the ball to Hayley Stoneman, whose shot came back off the post and fell to Kerry Alderson who gleefully scooped it up and flung it into the back of the net in the most dramatic of fashions. With the final score at 1-1, Newmarket took home their first point of the season in division 1.

Men’s 2s: 3-2 win vs I-ES 5 (Home)

- Week 1 Results: Winning Start for Men’s 1s as L1 Game Abandoned

Men’s 1s: 5-2 win vs Norwich Dragons 3 (Home)
(Atkinson 2, Wilson 2, Dawson)

The Men’s 1st Team got off to a winning start at home to Norwich Dragons as an early goal blitz saw the home side go 3-0 up within minutes.

Will Wilson struck first with a deflected effort and proved dangerous from short corners, swiftly rifling in his second goal from the top of the D and later forcing a great save from the visiting keeper. James Atkinson combined well with Mike Skelton in attacking midfield and was able to notch up his first soon after, capping off a superb team move and sending Town to dreamland. However, Newmarket were caught on the break twice within a few minutes as Dragons tried to get back in to the contest, but a brilliant save from Ian Robinson on his debut in the Newmarket goal and a late effort from Josh Dawson ensured the score settled on 4-2 at the break.

The second half was comfortable for the home side, with the only goal coming from a Wilson ball into the box which was superbly converted by Atkinson for his second. Notable were solid performances by Chris Leggett in the deep lying midfield role and Darren Jenkins at right back, ensuring skipper Jordan Newnes tasted victory in his first game as captain.

Ladies’ 1s: A-A vs Harleston Magpies 2 (Home)
(Match abandoned due to injury stoppage)

The Ladies’ 1st Team put in a great debut performance in Division 1N to find themselves drawing 0-0 on 43 minutes when an injury to a Magpies player caused the game to be stopped. As the player could not be moved it was necessary to wait for an ambulance to arrive, and thus the game could not continue after such a lengthy stoppage. This fixture will be replayed in due course.

Newmarket started nervously but swiftly grew into the game, gaining more possession and playing some great hockey at times throughout the first half. The home goal was rarely threatened and there were no huge chances for either side, save for a handful of short corners, and this theme had continued into the second 35 up until the stoppage for an injury to the shoulder of the Magpies player. We all at Newmarket Hockey Club wish the player involved a swift recovery.

Men’s 2s: 1-0 win vs Harleston Magpies 5 (Away)
(Donald)

Men’s 3s: 3-2 win vs Cambridge South 4 (Friendly, away)
(Booth 2, Benedikz)

The M3’s followed up on last weeks, goal fest with a 3v2 victory away to Cambridge South 4s. Captain Booth led by example knocking in another brace (Thats 5 in 2 matches, will anyone catch him before the end of the season?) and John Benedikz tapped in a third from a short to make it 3v0 before half time. There were more excellent performances from the youngsters Charlie Cummings, Oliver Brown, Fred Kirk and James Atkinson in goal along with a particularly strong performance from Rory Podd in the middle of the park, but this weeks MoM went to yet another debutant Chris Heslop for his strong defensive work.
A week off next week, then the league begins.

- East League Hockey Update

21/09/2017
Respect of Umpires – Think about it please: As this weekend is the first weekend of the new season it is appropriate to issue a reminder to all clubs and players of their conduct towards umpires. Feedback from the ERHUA, County HUA’s and club umpires from last season is that dissent was at an all time high both from players and from the sidelines. Put simply this has got to stop. We all know that player within our team who from the first whistle chats to the umpire but we never tell them to be quiet and we all know that guy on the sidelines who think it is a bit of “banter” to shout the odd smart alec comment when a decision goes against our team. As we, including the umpires, are part of the hockey family it is time to bring this behaviour under control. We encourage all clubs to remind their players and supporters of their responsibility under the England Hockey Code of Conduct, and yes it applies to all players and all supporters both before, during and after the game. We can’t play the game without umpires, they volunteer to give their time so that we can all play the game and we MUST give all umpires a positive level of support and encouragement. Please remember that, where proved, penalties for umpire abuse from both England Hockey and the East League will always be strong both against the individual and the club concerned so the choice is in your hands, ignore it or play the game to let everyone enjoy it.

- Juniors – Welcome to 2017/18 Season

Dear Juniors,

We hope you have all enjoyed the school holidays and are looking forward to the start of the new hockey season.

We now have dates and details for the 2017-18 season which will start on Sunday 24th September. This is a bit later than normal due to the leisure centre hosting a triathlon event on Sunday 17th when we had originally planned to hold a club open day; as a result we have been informed there will be no car parking available. So the first junior training will take place on Sunday 24th September 10-12noon,

Due to the increased number of junior members we now have at the club we have decided to split training times on Sunday mornings for the coming season. This will give us more pitch space and allow us to run four age groups for the first time. Age groups are aligned to academic school years (i.e. based on a player’s age on 1st September) as requested by England Hockey. Groups and training times for the 2017-18 season will be as follows:

10-11am       U8’s & U10’s
11-12noon   U12s & U14s

Full details can be found on the club website here.

New for the coming season we have also entered U8, U10 and U12 teams into regular tournaments with twelve other Cambridgeshire clubs. If you look at the calendar on the club website you will see there are four dates for these throughout the season, including one which we will host at Newmarket on 3rd December. We have also entered an U14 team into a local development league which we hope will provide a few competitive fixtures throughout the season.

Also new for 2017-18 we will be offering some specialist goalkeeper training sessions throughout the season with Dan Brown, a national league GK. This will offer specific training for any current keepers plus allow anyone who wants to give goalkeeping a try the chance to do so. As soon as we have dates & times confirmed for this we will add details to the website.

Junior membership will again be £60 for the season and will include a club polo shirt and socks for all members who have paid their fees by 1st October. A junior membership form can be downloaded from the website here. Included on the membership form this year is the option to order a junior hoodie, this is at an additonal cost of £15 (£18 for an adult size).

Further information on junior membership is available in the new Junior Welcome Pack which can be downloaded from the website here.

We currently have space for new members so if you know of anyone who is keen to give hockey a go please feel free to pass on these details.

We look forward to seeing you all on 24th September. In the meantime if you have any questions please feel free to get in touch with me.

Thanks

Claire
