Still Unbeaten, mens 1’s make light work of Long Sutton

Newmarket I 8 – 0 Long Sutton II

Newmarket went into the fifth game of the 4NW season hoping to win and open a gap at the top of the table between them and second placed Alford, they ended up winning but drop to second on goal difference.
The team started dominantly, moving the ball early with great ball pace, Josh Dawson troubled the left back from the outset and set up the first goal after beating his man, driving the baseline and pulling back for Matt Holden to finish high into the top right corner. Josh Dawson scored the second with a first time deflection from Ollie Wade’s pinpoint cross doubling the lead.
With the back four of Will Wilson, Jordan Newnes, Simon Harrington and Dave Worrall sniffing out the Long Sutton attacks, goalkeeper Chris Routs was reduced to a spectator for the whole game. Ben Gotfredsen, making his second start of the season, put in a solid display in central midfield. Newmarket had an Andreou goal disallowed from a penalty corner after the umpires deemed that the initial strike was above the backboard, but they soon scored another two good teams goals, by Mike Skelton and Josh Dawson. Newmarket almost scored the goal of the game, moving from one D to the other in 5 passes only for Mike Skelton’s lob to come back off the bar. They went into half time four goals to the good.
As in all other games this season, when Newmarket have had a lead at half time, they have pushed on in the second half. Matt Holden got another and Mike Skelton added a second from close range, Holden then beat the goal keeper at the near post from the top of the D and Will Wilson flicked a short corner into the roof of the net.
Newmarket dominated form start to finish, but as in the previous week they wasted many short corners, which given the fact the team are now second on goal difference may prove costly. Man of the match was Josh Dawson for a terrific display on the right wing.
Training is at 7pm on Thursday at the leisure centre, new players are always welcome. Next week’s men’s first team match is at home, 2pm push back. Spectators are always appreciated.
