Week 15 Results – Men’s 2s Cause Upset as M3s Win Big

Men’s 1s: 3-5 loss vs Ipswich 2 (Away)
(Bell, Pears, Wade)

Newmarket Men’s 1s went down 5-3 to an Ipswich tactical masterclass in which the home side only managed to field 10 players. Despite taking the lead three times, Newmarket struggled to hold onto their advantage on each occasion and eventually felt the sucker punch when Ipswich slotted home twice late on to seal the three points. An extremely disappointing away performance at the spiritual home of Town Head Coach Adnan Zakir, who will surely have plenty to say at training this week.

Men’s 2s: 3-2 win vs Felixstowe 2 (Home)
(Andreou 2, Donald)

Despite the absence of talismanic skipper Drew Wood, Newmarket Men’s 2s pulled off a major upset in defeating top of the league Felixstowe 2s. A fine defensive performance topped off with great goals from Alex Andreou and Simon Donald meant the game was already won when Felixstowe fired home a short corner consolation with the last hit of the game. Man of the Match went to everyone’s favourite Eastern European “Andy Baker”, while special mention should also go to damaged defender “Louis Hrebeniak” for his team selection and tactical nous from the sidelines. He’s nearly as wise as Bungle!

Men’s 3s: 10-0 win vs Felixstowe 4 (Away)
(Evans 3, Walker 3, Benedikz, Booth, G. Cummins, H. Frost)

Jordan Walker made it 7 goals in 2 games as Newmarket Men’s 3s hit 10, for the first time, in their victory over Felixstowe’s development side. Hat-tricks from Walker and Chris Evans and further goals from Henry Frost, Greg Cummings. Peter Booth and John Benedikz completed the rout. Newmarket are playing a confident and attacking game, which has led to an unbeaten run of 8 games and to their leading Div 7NE with 4 games to play.

Ladies’ 1s: 2-1 win vs Spalding 1 (Away)
(G. Evans 2)

Ladies’ 2s: 0-1 loss vs City of Peterborough 3 (Home)

Newmarket L2s should hold their heads high after their performance in this match. Holding Peterborough for all the first half and most of the 2nd 0-0, the squad were animated, communicative but lacked finish.

Grace Morris (voted Man of the Match) was ubiquitous and confident in mid field. Neither team could score from penalty corners. There were exciting tumbles and tussles in both circles. Unfortunately one of these added to the season’s injury list as, during the first half, turning over her ankle took Centre Back Faye Andreou out of the game and off to A & E. Jersey Bennett had possibly one of the best matches of her senior career: ball to helmet: check; ball off every padding possible: check; one-on-one: check; test ability to fly: check; penalty flick saved: check.

Peterborough capitalised on a ball that hadn’t been cleared soundly and a skilful player lifted the ball to finally change the scoreline in their favour.

It was a great shame not to pick up points on this return to league matches but Coach Chris Evans is confident that if this standard of play continues Newmarket L2s can pull themselves safe of the relegation zone.

Ladies’ 3s: 0-0 draw vs Ely City 2 (Home)

This week we were without Captain but we eagerly led by the Vice with the help of Colin following his return from illness.  Unfortunately, we lost Rachel Pegg to umpiring but gained Helen Hansgate to fill the gap.

After last week’s performance the team were riding high and were again able to field a large strong squad.

Ely City started strong and caught the team unprepared but they soon got into gear and responded hard to the determined attach by City.

Newmarket had some great moves taking the ball around pitch and at half time it was nil-nil.

Ely came back in the 2nd half but Newmarket kept their cool and attacked the City goal, narrowly missing out on a goal.

Ely pushed hard into the dying minutes of the game but Newmarket keep them at bay with the final result winning the team a point in the league.

There were some amazing performances by Janie Harrington and Callie Plumb with Janie going on to win man of the match.

Ladies’ 4s: 4-2 win vs Ely City 3 (Away)
(Asker 2, Howe 2)
