Week 20 Results – Ladies’ 1s Go Marching On at ‘Borough

Men’s 1s: 1-4 loss vs Bury St Edmunds 1 (Away)
(Wilson)

Men’s 2s: 0-5 loss vs UEA 2 (Home)

We came.

We saw.

We lost 5-0.

We may be going down, but we’ll go down laughing.

Newmarket Men’s 2s suffered a defeat surely consigning them to relegation in the 3pm pushback against UEA 2s. The game started poorly for Town with an early short corner resulting in the home side going behind, before a Hrebeniak own goal doubled UEA’s advantage. Although Newmarket did manage to create a handful of chances throughout the match, notably from short corners, the away side’s quality showed and towards the end of the second half the strikers filled their boots – two goals on the break topped off with a classy/fluky/accidental (delete as appropriate) finish by a UEA midfielder through his own legs finally sunk Town and condemned them to a 12th defeat of the season and, surely, relegation. However, as always, a good time was had by all and we’ll only come back stronger.

DOTD jointly went to Ollie ‘hide & seek’ Trent and Louis ‘bigfoot’ Hrebeniak for his Messi-esque cool-as-you-like backheel into his own net.

MOTM went to 2s debutante Mike Landshoff for a terrific performance at right back – although, as he wasn’t around to pay the associated fine, Andy ‘daylight robbery’ Baker defaulted this prestigious award to Simon Donald for his glorious and richly deserving tally of one vote.

Men’s 3s: 2-0 win vs Norwich Dragons 6 (Away)
(Andreou, Benedikz)

Newmarket Men’s 3s continued their pursuit of promotion with an excellent 2v0 win away to Norwich Dragons 6s. The timely return to winning after not doing so for 2 games means that should they win at home to Watton next week, promotion will be confirmed.
Goals from Alex Andreou and John Benedikz, gave Newmarket 3s the edge in a hard fought victory. The whole teamed upped its performance on previous weeks but with Will Frost and Simon Everett producing man of the match performances it shows we did not have it all our own way.
A good game was had by all fielding a team of John Benedikz, Peter Booth, Will Frost, Henry Frost, Simon Everitt, Chris Evans, Jordan Walker, Ben Atkinson, Seth Bailey, Alex Andreou, Rory Podd and Oscar Kenny.

Ladies’ 1s: 1-0 win vs City of Peterborough 2 (Away)
(G. Evans)

Ladies’ 2s: 1-6 loss vs Ely City 1 (Home)
(Excell)

Newmarket Ladies’ 2s were at the rear end of a 6-1 loss against Ely 1s this weekend, with the first half seeming to rush over our heads as the team gathered in what was happening. By the end of the first half the score was 4-1 with an amazing goal scored by Laura Excell and assisted by Hannah Fox, team spirit was high going into the second half. The defence worked hard, sticking close to their players, Sam Brooke was outstanding and really brought the defence together. She thoroughly deserved her man of the match votes. Milou Ottilini, Helen Hansgate and Hannah Fox put into action this week’s training drill, making passes up the left wing with pace and the opposition seemed baffled at times. Keeper Jersey kept everyone in check, her voice getting louder with every game, by the end of the season, she will shout and we think the opposition defence will do as directed.

Ladies’ 3s: 0-1 loss vs Royston 2 (Home)

Saturday saw the Ladies 3rd XI take on Royston 2s at home. The game started rather abruptly for Newmarket as Royston scored. Newmarket rallied and fought on to hold Royston to their 1-0 lead. Half time change of tactics saw Newmarket create better opportunities for holding possession and driving up pitch, but for the most part it was a game in which Newmarket were defending. The team worked well together and defended well to hold Royston to the their 1-0 tally.
Man of the match went deserved to centre back Rachel Pegg and midfielder Jane Dryland.
Next week sees the ladies away to St Neots.

Ladies’ 4s: 0-13 loss vs Cambridge Nomads 2 (Away)
