(Friendly) Newmarket Ladies 1st’s v Bury St Edmunds Ladies 2nds
9-2 win to Newmarket
Newmarket ladies 1st team started their pre-season friendly campaign last Saturday against Bury St Edmunds 2nd team. This season Newmarket find themselves promoted to the East League, Division 2 (NW) and as Bury were relegated from this level last season the stage was set for an even contest.
It was Bury who started the scoring through a puzzling deflection after 5 minutes despite early dominance from Newmarket. It took a further 20 minutes for the home side to reply through a Louise Downs penalty corner strike. Soon after this Newmarket got into their stride and began to make the ball do the work, passing around the opposition. In the last 5 minutes of the first half Newmarket extended their lead by another 3 goals through Hayley Stoneman and Di Thomas who converted two chances.
The second half Bury were keen to revive their performance and pushed hard on the Newmarket defence. Stalwart defending from Isabel Hooley and Clodie Rolph kept the opposition at bay and great link up play to Jazz Wombwell and Jenny Richards created the space and width that town needed to score a further 3 goals through Stoneman, Thomas and Richards. Bury struck back through a quick break, a shot that narrowly beat town keeper Sue Bullimore.
Play began to weaken as both teams showed a slight lack of fitness but Newmarket sealed their victory with a further 2 goals in the last 15 minutes from Stoneman and Thomas. Team Captain Gail McDonnell and coach Colin Seakins were satisfied with the team’s result and notable performances came from Georgina Kerr, Peri Green and Rebecca Swift who were all making their 1st team debuts.
