Newmarket Ladies 1’s v’s Ely. (6-0 win to Ely)
Newmarket’s league opener against local rivals Ely proved a tough challenge.
Ely who were very confident on the ball from the start scored early on by creating space down their right wing and weaving the ball past the Newmarket defence.
Newmarket determined not to let their opposition gain momentum managed to break from a misjudged Ely short corner, and despite having an overload of attacking players available failed to convert due to a foul.
Ely managed to utilise their speed and one touch abilities to pepper the Newmarket goal with shots and tremendous goalkeeping work from Sue Bullimore ensured the first half only finished 1-0 to Ely.
The second half continued in a similar fashion although Town began to level the speed of their opponents and more challenges were put to the Ely keeper. Despite notable efforts from the Newmarket defence, Ely managed to bag three goals in quick succession.
An injury to Bullimore meant that Zoe Bailey took on goal keeping responsibilities and the home team rallied to keep the pressure off her.
The last ten minutes Town were beginning to make progress with their attacking play and although Ely converted two more chances Newmarket will take great experience away from the game.
Isabel Hooley was names man of the match for great movement and distribution of the ball.
