Ladies gain first ever victory in East League!

Newmarket Ladies 1’s v’s Cambridge Nomads 1’s: 3-1 win to Newmarket.

With Newmarket’s league position looking precarious the team knew they must produce a good result for their third league game of the season against Cambridge Nomads.

A sprightly start from Newmarket caused an array of positive passing to all areas of the pitch. A beautiful move was created by Jasmine Wombwell in defence; she passed to Claire McDonnell who drove the ball up the pitch. After a swift one two with Di Thomas Hayley Stoneman hit the target to put Town in front after just seven minutes.

With both teams battling to keep possession in midfield there seemed acres of space for Newmarket to use their wide players – Tracy Cockerill and Jenny Richards. Despite a few more goal front showdowns the score remained for the same for the first half.

Newmarket starting the second half, looked a little sluggish and top class defending from Gail McDonnell, Clodie Rolph, Louise Downs and keeping by Sue Bullimore kept Nomads at bay until nineteen minutes had gone when the opposition levelled the score from a goal line scrap.

Again finding a lot of space out wide Zoe Bailey combined with Georgie Kerr who unleashed a killer pass to Thomas – she was fouled one on one to goal and a penalty stroke was awarded. Downs confidently put the ball away to put Town back in front again.

All that remained was for Newmarket to keep possession and push for a further lead – Stoneman put the game to bed by scoring her second in fine style three minutes before time.
