With the Ladies II’s current form, Newmarket travelled to Bury on Saturday high on confidence and eager to remain 2nd in the League. From the whistle, they pressurised the Bury defence with a salvo of shots into the D, their first penalty corner came after 10 minutes which was fired home by Lydia Evans. From this point on, Newmarket remained in total command. Their 2nd goal came from Ruth Godden, being the first to pounce on a loose ball in the D. With Lydia Evans getting a hat-trick and Ruth netting her second, Newmarket ended the 1st half, five nil up.
The 2nd half was no different to the first, Beth Wombwell added 2 goals and Lydia bagged her forth of the match. This was probably Newmarket’s finest performance, the back four of Captain Nikki Boyle, Jess Boyle, Samantha Brooke and Mel Cummins ensured nothing got passed them, keeper Shannon Stannett never touched the ball all game. Harriet Briggs, Mel Podd and Peri Green dominated the midfield allowing Lydia Evans to have a roving role across the pitch. The front line up of Ruth Godden, Beth Wombwell, Angel Fayers and Donna Keates, created numerous headaches for the Bury defence, the substitutions were seamless and everyone gelled together.
Coach Chris Evans commented, “we are the team to beat in this league and if the performances continue like this, I am confident we will be playing premier league hockey next season”.
