Super Sunday For Stoneman..Ladies 1’s In Cup Final!

(CUP) Newmarket Ladies 1’s V’s Wisbech 2’s. Newmarket won 8-0.
Scorers: Hayley Stoneman 5, Di Thomas 2, Beth Wombwell 1.
After a high paced game the day before, the first team had to rely on stamina and tactical substitutions to face Wisbech in their group stage, Cup competition showdown the next day. The winners of the game would go on to play in the league Cup final on the 24th March against Spalding.
After Wisbech beat Town on their last meeting Newmarket were apprehensive, however it seemed the Wisbech side who turned up were a completely different opposition as Newmarket were able to control all areas of the field and run at goal.
Di Thomas scored first for Newmarket after picking up the final pass well from Hayley Stoneman. It was then Stoneman who hit the backboards after already hitting the post twice. From this point on Town were in no doubt they were in for a win.
After half time Newmarket really got motoring and with pace and vision Lydia Evans and Angel Fayers were instrumental in the movement up-field. Lucy Brown and Jenny Richards also looked sharp and unselfishly provided crosses for their teammates.
Next to strike was Beth Wombwell who got her second of the weekend by pouncing on a loose ball in the D after a goalmouth scramble. After her initial bad luck in hitting the post; Stoneman shone for the rest of the game. After controlling the midfield and setting up her teammates she went on to score a further four times – all demonstrating fine skill and precision which earned her player of the match. Her pick of the bunch being her last – a chip shot into the roof of goal.
Town now had yards of space all over the field and after a pinpoint cross from Fayers, Thomas swept the ball for it to just sneak inside the right post.
A very impressive 8-0 win for the squad as they still find themselves back in contention for the league and cup double.
