Men’s 1’s Friendly v Royston

Royston 1st XI  4 – 2  Newmarket 1st XI Goal scorers: Ollie Wade, Will Wilson Newmarket’s mens first team travelled to Royston for their last friendly before the start of the 2012-13 season. After being delayed in traffic heading for the Duxford air show the team arrived late and had to start after a short warm-up. With Mike Skelton playing cricket, Matt Holden doing as his wife says and Josh Dawson completing in the T671 category at the PowerLympics, the team were missing 3 outfield regulars. Keeper Chris Routs was working his shift at a well known fast food restaurant in the Olympic park, so the team were grateful to Ethan Brown for deputising. On a baking hot day the game was split into three twenty five minute sections, Newmarket settled quickly and were the better team in the opening period. Ollie Wade took the lead after Chris Leggett drove the by line, pulling back to Mark Pears, who’s shot was blocked by the keeper only for Wade to force home the rebound. Wilson soon doubled the advantage. During the second period Newmarket’s decision making let them down, twice conceding possession in the defensive third allowing Royston to score twice, the second an own goal from Simon Harrington. As the game wore on Royston’s 15 man squad made a difference, providing a constant test from Newmarket’s back line. In the last period, Royston scored with a drag flick from a penalty corner, they cleared a Newmarket penalty corner of the line and scored their fourth after another defensive mistake. This was a very useful test for the team, playing a very competent opposition who should do well in division 2S this season. Having been used to winning for the last few seasons, playing superior opposition gave Coach Nic Thorpe and Captain Will Wilson the chance to assess weaknesses the team have. They will look to address those over the coming few weeks at training.
