Club Open Day 2013!

Players, spectators and club members flocked to Newmarket Leisure Centre Astroturf last Sunday for Newmarket Hockey Club’s Open Day.
Dozens of young players were put through their paces by Junior Coach Alex Andreou in the morning where they learnt the core basics of passing and moving around a hockey pitch. All got some hockey ‘goodies’ for taking part, kindly provided by England Hockey. Next on offer were some fun challenges including Beat The Keeper, Penalty Flick Contest, Hockey Obstacle Course and the England Hockey Target Shot run by club members Chris Routs, Dave Worrall, Jordan Newnes, Ollie Wade and Chris Leggett.
Burwell based shop ‘Mr Hockey’ (Mr Cricket) managed by Merrick Fuller were pitch side selling and promoting their hockey equipment and clothing to players looking to get that extra edge this season.
Barbecue food and refreshments were on offer all day run by club members Nicola and Peter Boyle and much to the delight of everyone ‘Magic Ices’ ice cream van provided the sweet treats. The water was kindly donated to the club by ICENI, based in Duxford.
The afternoon played host to a full scale mixed game with club faces from past current and future getting involved. Despite a quick rain shower the match was fast paced and there were plenty of shots testing the keepers, all kept in control by NHC umpires. Duncan Freed and Jazz Wombwell kept the Tempo up throughout the day with music and PA shout outs.
Club Chairman Chris Routs said “The day ran very smoothly and was a great success with lots of new faces, some of whom have already given positive feedback and have become members of the club. Thanks must go to The New Astley Club for their promotion and attendance, England Hockey, ICENI Water, Mr Hockey and Newmarket Leisure Centre for supporting the day. We are still welcoming anyone else who wants to join the club as a player, umpire, supporter or potential sponsor. Please go to our website for more contacts and details or phone 07947 378 578.”
The club’s teams have been back pre season training for a few weeks now and are currently testing out squads at pre season friendlies before league matches commence at the end of September. All squads are hoping for a successful, enjoyable season.
