Newmarket Ladies 1’s v Newmarket Ladies 2’s. 7-1 win to Newmarket L1’s
A tough contest for both ladies first and second team as they had to face each other to determine league points. The occasion was crucial to both as the first team find themselves struggling to hit the top of the table and the second team are fighting being relegated.
The 1’s took first push back and were playing a little sedately, how ever just a few minutes in Claire McDonnell Found Di Thomas at the top of the D and she swept past Captain Sue Bullimore in goal. Five minutes later Thomas was alert to pounce on a lose ball near the D provided by Beth Wombwell to get her second.
The 2’s undeterred fought on and were increasing their time on the ball and looking the more inspired side. Some spectacular work from Vicky Sievewright in the centre of the field gave the 2’s every chance to score-and that they did from a beautiful overlap on the right side of the pitch via Grace Evans. She passed to Tania Fisher in the D and without hesitation she cooly brushed the ball home past an outstretched Jade Atkinson on goal.
This left the 1’s with the challenge of upping their game and they waited till after half time to do this. Lydia Evans and Becca Swift created menacing runs in the middle and used wide players April Atkinson and Kerry Alderson who were running tirelessly. Faye Andreou and Jazz Wombwell were able to come forward to push play goalwards. The 2’s also were working hard and Donna Keates made some impressive runs up front working with her teammates such as Anna Sambrook and Holly Woods.
The 1’s started to increase the tempo and play more to their full potential. Di Thomas was on target again from close range using her reverse stick flick to get a hattrick, and the a fourth shortly after the break taking the game a little beyond the 2’s reach of sharing the points.
Both sides were awarded short corners in the second half but failed to capitalise-something they must rectify for future games.
Next to strike for the 1’s was Kerry Alderson, supported by Gail Parkins, she glided down the left side and shifted the ball skilfully and got a shot off to make it 5-1 to the first team despite good tracking from the 2’s.
Becca Swift was also rewarded for her follow up on the ball and she rallied to keep it in the D and with a stretch pelted into the net.
Now both teams were working hard and the fitness of both were beginning to show making substitutions crucial. A penalty flick was awarded to the first team after a foot stopped the ball on the line. Andreou took the chance but did not quite meet it as she hoped and Bullimore was on form to react to save the shot.
The final goal came from the 2’s but unfortunately into their own net giving the first team 7 to their name.
With 7 games to go there is still plenty left to play for for both teams . Next week the ladies 1’s take on Haverhill at home, 2pm and the 2’s play Huntingdon away.
