Newmarket Hockey Club are very proud of goalkeeper Martin McCourt who is flying off to Australia on Saturday 26th March to represent Scotland at the Over 50’s Hockey World Cup.
Martin came out of retirement after a 15 year absence in January 2014, answering an SOS from Newmarket coach Nic Thorpe when Newmarket suffered an injury to their first choice keeper and the reserve keeper’s work commitments changed.
Since his return, Martin has helped Newmarket stabilise themselves in the league, with the first team finishing fourth in the last two seasons, and has represented Scotland at the European Championships. Now his children have grown up, he has the time he felt he wasn’t able to commit to the game when they were much younger and feels much better for being part of a social hockey club!
Next season, the club will be adding a third men’s team in the league. Newmarket will then have teams in divisions 3, 5 & 7 and will be able to offer a competitive level of hockey to those of all abilities, be they juniors just beginning to make their way in the game, or adults returning after a break similar to Martin!
