In a match described by one supporter as “frustrating” league leaders went one goal down to third from bottom Royston at the pitch that geography forgot. The slow pace of the game did indeed frustrate Newmarket, slowness seemed to seep up from the astro turf and make everyone lethargic and lack lustre. It was certainly not our best performance.
An equalising goal was plucked from the air, quite literally by Georgia Atherton as Faye Andreou’s reverse stick shot caught a defender’s stick to go high and wide and was deftly redirected across the goal line to salvage a point. Although still top of the league, Captain Zoë Bailey will now be leading a team fighting with every inch of their hockey brains and bodies to stay clear of South 3.
They meet Shefford & Sandy at home next week 11am.
